Creativity or Responsibility

I hate that sometimes I feel like I have to choose between being creative and being responsible.

There is not much in life like creating music that gives me such a sense of satisfaction.  I'm in the zone!  Hours will pass and I won't notice.  At the end of the day, when I'm creative, I really feel that I accomplished something meaningful.

On the other hand, after I come out of my creative time warp, I often realize that I neglected to make an important time-sensitive phone call or return that email or grade that stack of tests or eat or turn off that slowcooker which is currently burning the beef stew or any number of tasks that are waiting for me.

So I usually spend the next day or two repairing what I left undone.

I recently made this connection that sometimes I avoid creating because I don't like feeling completely irresponsible afterwards.  However, when I do get all of those checklist items done, I see that there are a thousand waiting to take their place.

I realize that I'm probably exaggerating a bit, but does anybody have any suggestions of putting together creativity and responsibility?

Yeah - I totally identify with this. Do you think it's possible to plan the times when you are going to escape and be creative? Or perhaps this ruins the whole drive - like "be spontaneous...now!" Speaking as one who deeply appreciates your creativity...I'd prefer that you just abandon responsibility and just be creative all the time!
